Ukrainian Jazz Vibes

Presented by the Ukrainian Canadian Association of Yukon, internationally-renowned Ukrainian jazz musician Taras Luka performed in Whitehorse on Friday, May 3rd, accompanied by Vancouver-based pianist Dean Thiessen and Yukon musicians bassist Ragn Royle and drummer Lonnie Powell.

The evening was filled with jazz and swing standards and Taras’ own compositions. As the evening went on and the dance floor filled, the quartet was joined by Olivier de Colombel, who, despite jet lag, added his saxophone stylings.

Over 250 people enjoyed the fabulous music, delicious borshch, and silent auction offerings.

UCAY thanks Jazz Yukon, Wykes’ Independent Grocer, and Air North for their support of this event. Bruce Barrett took wonderful photos and Tara Kolla’s decor brought much-appreciated touches of spring.

We were also privileged to receive a large donation from Whitehorse Rotary and look forward to future partnership opportunities.
