Aug 24, 2026 – Ukraine’s Independence Day

On Sunday, August 23, the Ukrainian Canadian Association celebrated the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

Ukrainians and all who support Ukraine celebrated this event amid ongoing attacks on the country. Ukraine continues to defend itself day and night and preserves its freedom, thanks to the extraordinary courage and strength of its people.

UCAY organized an event to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, which took place in Shipyard Park from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

The gazebo was festively decorated with Ukrainian symbols, and visitors were greeted with Ukrainian music, food and refreshments.

Information stands dedicated to Ukrainian culture and traditions were set up for guests. A photo booth offered everyone the opportunity to try on a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt—a vyshyvanka—and have their photo taken. Documentary films highlighting Ukraine’s history and heritage were shown throughout the event.

UCAY President Lesia Hnatiw shared a few word with those gathered followed by a moment of silence to honour those who gave their lives for Ukraine’s freedom.

We remember and honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to defend their homeland.  We stand in solidarity with all Ukrainians whose fortitude and determination continue to inspire the world.

We extend our sincere thanks to Shipyard Park for providing the venue for this event. We are also grateful to everyone who joined us to celebrate Ukrainian heritage and stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine!
